Claude models now available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher

What happened
Microsoft now lets users pick Anthropic's Claude models inside the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Researcher gathers, analyses and summarises information from the web and work content, and users can select Claude from a model dropdown to generate and refine research reports. Access is not automatic: an admin must first allow Anthropic AI models in the Microsoft 365 admin center, where Anthropic is registered as a subprocessor for Microsoft Online Services, and users need a Copilot license.
Why it matters
The model wars have moved inside the enterprise suite. Microsoft is no longer an OpenAI-only channel: your Copilot deployment can now run on a competitor's models, chosen per task. That is good news for quality and negotiating leverage, but it creates a new governance decision most organisations have not made: which models are approved for which data, and who flips the switch. Enabling Anthropic as a subprocessor also changes your data-processing chain, which belongs in your DPIA and vendor register.

Ask your IT or Microsoft 365 admin three questions this week: is Anthropic enabled as a subprocessor in our tenant, under what data-processing terms, and which teams should be allowed to use Claude in Researcher? Then run a side-by-side test of Researcher with and without Claude on a real research task before setting the policy.
